Leadership

The four management fields

Management is not detached from any context. Management must fit the environment. It makes a difference whether you manage in the public sector, under competitive pressure, in crisis or growth, in production or service, international or West Jutland, IT, research or construction. Management must fit the context.

A good manager has the ability to focus on what contributes value to the company and what does not, including contributing to developing the company. It requires a good overall understanding to see one's own role in a larger context, including having an overview of the company as a whole.

Leadership

This means that you, as a manager, must take responsibility and operate in four different fields in order to exercise a holistic understanding of the organisation:

Strategic management – is about leading the organization safely into the future, identifying the potential, drawing the vision, laying out the strategy and getting it communicated and anchored so that your employees want to join the journey.

Operations management – is about managing daily life with prioritization of resources and optimization of processes.

Professional management – is about ensuring the quality of the product the organization delivers.

Personnel management – is about development, motivation, communication, giving feedback so that the employees do their best.

The figure shows how operational management mirrors strategic management – and how professional management and personnel management support operational management. This means that you as a manager must both take part in the strategic management and contribute to the implementation of the strategy, including ensuring that it is integrated into your operational management, professional management and personnel management.

All four types of leadership can be done with different styles. Here you have to choose your style to be authentic. But preferably a style that fits your company culture. Learn how to find your personal leadership position here
