Charismatic change management

By Jesper Koch

Charismatic leadership is often misunderstood. This is because many still regard charisma as an expression of an innate personality. You either have it or you don't. However, research shows that charisma is by far a skill that can be trained and refined on a par with other skills.

Change management

Charisma = credibility and authenticity

Credibility and authenticity are often considered opposites of charisma, but they are quite the opposite. Authenticity is a prerequisite for the leader to be able to develop and use a positive form of charismatic leadership. Charismatic leadership is not guided by the need for power, dominance and manipulation, but by the desire to create good sustainable results that are for the good of the organisation. The charismatic leader is trustworthy because he is professionally skilled and because he is particularly sensitive to understanding the special organizational, business and market challenges/opportunities that present themselves in the company.

A charismatic leader is authentic because he is passionate about what he does, and therefore radiates an energy that is contagious and inspiring to those around him. It is this special link between charisma, credibility and authenticity that makes the charismatic leader successful.
