What is MUS?

An employee development meeting (MUS) is an open dialogue between employee and manager, which is usually held once a year. The MUS interview gives the employee the opportunity to return his own contribution to the workplace. For the manager, it gives the opportunity to consider how the workplace can support the employee's development and well-being. In this way, the development interview is an advantage for both the employee and the organisation.

Employee interviews

MUS should be used for:

  • To create a basis for the employee to thrive and function in the job
  • To ensure that the employee gets the opportunity for professional and personal development in relation to current and future tasks
  • To discuss the employee's competencies in relation to performance
  • To clarify the employee's and the workplace's expectations of the employee
  • To clarify the employee's expectations of the manager
  • To clarify whether the employee needs to develop his qualifications
  • To draw up development goals for the individual employee
  • To ensure that the manager gets an overview of the employee's skills and development wishes

A MUS interview can be usefully divided into three phases:

  • A backwards - how has it been since the last time?
  • A current one - how are things going right now?
  • A forward-looking one - what wishes/needs are there for the future - and how do we get there?

How do you structure the MUS conversation?

An unstructured and informal conversation, where you talk about different topics without using a schedule, can create a relaxed atmosphere, but the risk of not getting all the way around and in depth with important issues is great. Most workplaces therefore use a schedule. The form can be made in many ways. Some forms ask general questions, while others have more detail. A schedule can function as a to-do list or be used as a common reference for understanding what the conversation should contain and thus a common agenda. The form does not need to be followed slavishly.

After the conversation, it is important that solutions and conclusions are made, and that you agree together who and how to follow up.
